The Green Line Type 10 tram model was recently unveiled in Boston’s central square. MBTA, the transportation operator for Boston and Massachusetts, presented the latest Green Line Type 10 tram model. This project is being developed by CAF USA Inc., part of the Spanish CAF company, under a $810 million contract signed with MBTA in 2022.
The Green Line Type 10 tram is intended for Boston’s Green Line, spanning 36 kilometers, which requires upgrades and an increased fleet size. The new trams will replace the current Type 7 and Type 8 models, providing greater capacity and improved technical features to meet the city’s growing infrastructure demands.
One of the key features of the Green Line Type 10 tram model is its seven-section structure, with a 12-meter increase in length over its predecessors and a fully low-floor design for passenger comfort. Enhanced doorways will allow for faster boarding and disembarking, while video surveillance and information screens will increase convenience and security.
Following the public presentation, MBTA and CAF will continue to improve the project, taking visitor feedback and suggestions into account. Under the contract, CAF USA Inc. is required to manufacture 102 Green Line Type 10 trams, with the first expected in 2026. Full-scale series production will begin in 2027, with final delivery scheduled for 2031.
The new Green Line Type 10 tram model has been designed with modern safety, comfort, and capacity standards, marking a significant step in the modernization of Boston’s transportation network.
